My Experience With Receipt Apps
I have used Receipt Hog and InboxDollars since 2023. I do not consider either one a serious source of income. I use them because they can produce a little extra value from purchases I was already going to make.
With Receipt Hog, I have completed 14 cash-outs totaling about $120. My current earnings are roughly $5 per month. I usually choose Amazon gift cards, although I have also used PayPal.
With InboxDollars, I have completed 16 cash-outs totaling about $140. Receipts are only one part of how I use InboxDollars, so that $140 should not be treated as receipt earnings alone. I also use its Daily List, games, emails, surveys and other activities.
Is the Money Worth the Time?
For me, yes—but only because I keep the process simple. Receipt Hog usually takes just a few minutes when I upload receipts. I tend to do it about once a week rather than making it a major daily task.
InboxDollars requires more attention. I spend roughly five minutes on its Daily List on most days and another five to ten minutes per week dealing with receipts. Again, those activities contribute to the overall program, not just receipt earnings.
If an app required me to spend an hour sorting receipts to earn a few cents, I would question whether it was worthwhile. The goal is to fit these programs into things you are already doing, not build your day around them.
What I Like About Receipt Hog
Receipt Hog is straightforward. I can submit receipts from many different places, and most of the receipts I upload receive some type of credit. Depending on the receipt, that may be coins, sweepstakes entries, or a combination.
I also link eligible accounts and use the in-app slot game. One thing I like is that waiting for a larger cash-out can provide a better exchange rate, meaning fewer coins are needed for each dollar of reward.
There are limitations. Linked accounts sometimes need to be reconnected, and occasionally I have trouble getting one to reconnect. Receipts also need to be submitted within the program's allowed time period.
How InboxDollars Receipts Are Different
InboxDollars is not primarily a receipt app for me. Receipt scanning is one part of a larger routine.
For ordinary receipts, the reward can be very small. Better rewards may depend on selecting eligible products or offers before shopping. You generally need to select the store and qualifying items before scanning the receipt.
That makes InboxDollars more involved than simply taking a picture of every receipt and moving on. I still use it because the receipts combine with the Daily List and the other activities I already do.
What Can You Realistically Expect?
I would not join a receipt app expecting meaningful monthly income. Based on my own experience, I think of the rewards as extra spending money.

Your results can be different. How often you shop, which receipts qualify, available offers, program rules, and how consistently you use an app can all affect what you receive.
How to Make Receipt Apps More Worthwhile
- Do not buy something just for the reward. A rebate is not a saving if it causes you to spend money you would not otherwise spend.
- Submit receipts consistently. Waiting too long can cause an otherwise eligible receipt to miss a submission deadline.
- Combine the task with your normal routine. A few minutes once or twice a week is easier to maintain than letting receipts pile up.
- Pay attention to special offers. Some programs pay more for particular products or activities.
- Judge the program by your own results. Track what you actually receive and decide whether that return is worth your time.
So, Are Receipt Apps Worth It?
They are worth it to me because I keep my expectations realistic. I am not shopping in order to earn receipt rewards. I am getting a small reward from shopping I was already doing.
If you enjoy squeezing a little more value from everyday spending and do not mind spending a few minutes submitting receipts, they can be useful. If you expect them to produce substantial income, you are likely to be disappointed.
